ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Maryland officials are launching a new kind of environmental and policy center.

Gov. Martin O'Malley and Sen. Barbara Mikulski will be among the officials celebrating the University of Maryland's National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center on Monday in Annapolis.

The center aims to bring together experts from many fields, including engineers, economists and social and computational scientists, to create ways to meet human needs while improving the health of the systems humans depend on.

The center is supported by the National Science Foundation through a grant to the University of Maryland.
