Officers from the Anne Arundel County Police Department were dispatched to the area for a power outage -- what they found was a vehicle being swallowed by flames.
Route 450 near The Ridges was closed due to the fatal accident. Officers say the car crashed into a utility pole.
The car was occupied by one person, pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased is identified as Douglas Andrew Halloran, 27, of the 1200 block of Chelton Lane in Bowie.
BGE was called to the scene in attempt to restore power.
Officials say the 2000 Honda Civic 2-door, was traveling east on Defense Highway at a high rate of speed, and the driver lost control. The utility pole was struck by the driver's side of the vehicle.
