SEVERNA PARK, Md. (WMAR) - An officer was the one who needed help after he was involved in a crash in Severna Park early Tuesday morning, when a man who heard the crash ran to help.

It happens to all of us, but just after midnight, it happened to an Anne Arundel County police officer.

Officer Richard Stang was driving home in his cruiser just after his shift ended when an animal darted out in front of his car on Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard.

He swerved to avoid the animal and slid off the road, and when it finally stopped, the cruiser was on it's side.

Officer Stang was taken to Shock Trauma with non-life threatening injuries as a precaution.

Leo Zipp has lived in the area for more than 20 years, he heard the crash and immediately ran outside to see if he could help.

"I saw the police car out there and the officer was climbing out of his car holding his head," said Zipp.

There are a lot of woods in the area of Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard and no lights.

With as much time as police officers spend behind the wheel, it's not unusual for accidents to happen.

There was another officer involved crash about 6 hours earlier yesterday. A Department of Natural Resources Officer was responding to a call when he crashed near Hilltop and High Point Road in Pasadena.
