PASADENA, Md. (WMAR) - Anne Arundel County Police are trying to figure out what caused tractor trailer to come unhitched from it's load of fuel, causing a spill and closing Ritchie Highway for hours.

As a result of the spill Ritchie Highway was closed in both directions for nearly 5 hours.

Fire officials say the truck was attempting to make a left hand turn onto Ritchie Highway when the trailer came unhitched. There were no reports of any injuries, but the truck is leaking gas from it's 8,000 gallon container.

Maryland Department of the Environment officials are on the scene assessing the situation.
