ANNAPOLIS, Md - Former Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold was sentenced on two counts of misconduct in office Thursday.
In a sentencing memo earlier this week, the state prosecutor did not recommend jail time for the 70-year-old because of his age and health issues. Attorneys also asked for 5 years probation, 500 hours of community service and a $100,000 fine.
The sentence handed by Judge Dennis Sweeney met some of those requests, but Leopold will spend time behind bars -- 30 days of jail time were to begin immediately.
In addition, Leopold will pay a $100,000 fine and is expected to complete 400 hours of community service and be on house arrest for 30 days.
Leopold was convicted of two counts of misconduct in office in January for using staffers and his taxpayer funded police detail to do campaign work and run errands like change his catheter bag, which he needed after several back surgeries.
The former county executive resigned shortly after he was convicted.
