The United States Coast Guard says you should follow these 4 tips before going out on the water. 

1.  Wear a United States Coast Guard approved lifejacket.

2.  Make sure safety gear is onboard and in good condition.

3.  Check the weather forecast.

4.  Know the rules of the water.
