Several schools in the area remained closed Thursday, nearly two days after Superstorm Sandy cleared the area.

The reason – no electricity. Among those were four schools in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools district.

District spokesman Bob Mosier said two of the schools were located in the southern part of the county, which was having power line issues. The other two are back to back in the same complex.

According to Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE), a total of 234,567 customers in Anne Arundel County lost power during Hurricane Sandy’s assault on the area. As of 1 p.m. Thursday, just over 2,000 customers still were without service.

Officials with Anne Arundel county Public Schools say they plan on asking the state to forgive the days instead of having to schedule makeup days for the storm.

Mosier said the district has built four severe weather days into the calendar, and said students could attend school on those days to make up for the days they lost during Sandy.

"It's a routine discussion," he said. "But typically you like to know how many days you have left heading into the winter storm season."

A message on the district’s website said the following Thursday afternoon:

As of 7:45 a.m. 11/1/12, all AACPS facilities have electrical power. All schools opening on time for students and staff Friday, November 2, which will be a two-hour early dismissal for all students. No PM half-day sessions of pre-kindergarten or ECI classes.
