WASHINGTON - Videos of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' recovery from a bullet wound to the brain shows the congresswoman struggling to relearn how to speak.

In the first few weeks after she was shot, videos taken by her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, capture the congresswoman's struggle just to learn how to nod, to raise two fingers and use the right word to describe something. Eventually, she learns to speak again and smile.

Kelly says he documented her recovery because he knew she would astonish her skeptics. The video was shown Monday night as part of her first public interview since the January shooting. It aired on ABC's "20/20" program.

Giffords has undergone intensive therapy. At times, despair set in. One clip shows her sobbing in her therapist's arms
