WASHINGTON - The Pentagon will make a major announcement on women in combat. Women are not allowed to serve in combat units or on the front lines.
The Pentagon is opening up 14,000 jobs, most of them in the Army, that have been closed off to women because of the ban on women in combat. The jobs will include: Intelligence, Logistics and Communications in Combat Units.
It does not mean you will see women fighting in foxholes next to men. The Pentagon sees this as the first step towards more equal opportunity for women in the military.
More than 300,000 women have served in support roles in Iraq and Afghanistan. This policy shift will offer more opportunities for women.
The policy is expected to take effect later this summer.
