ANNAPOLIS, Md. - To the naked eye, you could mistake it for about half a cup of brown sugar, but the small bag with 140 grams of high-grade heroin carries a street value of almost $30,000.
Police discovered the drug along with marijuana and a huge stack of cash during raids on two homes in the Clay Street community of Annapolis.
"The information was based on community sources and information,” said Annapolis Police Chief Michael Pristoop, “The police department pursues those vigorously. In this instance, we have the drug unit quickly got information and acted just as fast and it resulted in removing from the street two handguns as well. You'll notice two 9 millimeter handguns---one Beretta and one Smith & Wesson, both loaded, from the scene."
The guns were reported stolen and the investigation into where the drugs originated from is far from over.
"You ask where these drugs come from. When we dig into it, we sometimes find there are Baltimore connections and sometimes Prince George's County and sometimes the District of Columbia," said Pristoop.
While members of the Drug Enforcement Unit and SWAT team made a pair of arrests, investigators say more suspects and more busts will come out of this.
Overall crime may be down in Maryland’s capital city, but the war on drugs is far from over.
"We are seeing there is an upswing in some hospitalizations and indicators to show that there's drug use out there and we're not naive enough to think we can solve all the problems with one good case like this,” said Pristoop, “It's a continued course of action that we have to go through and with the help of the people and the community here, we're getting it done."
Police arrested 19-year old Cortez Marshall on various drug charges and he’s already free on a $40,000 bond.
44-year old Robert Taylor faces similar charges, and he remains behind bars tonight at the Jennifer Road Detention Center.
