The families of three men killed on the Bay Bridge in 2007 after a trailer detached from an SUV have filed a $19-million lawsuit.

The trailer caused a number of collisions that killed James Ingle and Randall and Jonathan Orff, a father and son. Five others were injured.

According to the “Daily Record,” the Ingle and Orff families filed suit in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court, naming the SUV driver, the trailer owner, two truck drivers, their employees, and the Maryland Transportation Authority as defendants.

The suit alleges that the Transportation Authority knew two-way traffic on one span could be a problem because accidents had happened in the past. On the day of the accident, one of the bridge’s two spans was set up for two-way traffic, with no barrier between the eastbound and westbound lanes.
