BALTIMORE - State lawmakers are trying to help out teachers by giving them a larger tax break for school supplies.

The bill would allow teachers to write off as much as $500 for school supplies that they purchase out-of-pocket.

The current tax credit limit on out-of-pocket expenses from the federal government is $250.

Similar bills to increase the tax break failed in 2003, 2004, and 2005 because the measures were considered too expensive.
