If you're planning to pick up a shovel today, take a look at these tips first for shoveling snow safely.
Tip 1 - Warm up before you get started. You can do jumping jacks or take a couple of laps around your house before heading out to tackle the snow.
Tip 2 - Make sure you have the right equipment. An ergonomically correct shovel is important and will usually be lighter than other models.
Tip 3 - Technique is key. Make sure to push the shovel rather than lifting it and try not to overload the shovel.
Tip 4 - Take breaks whenever possible. Every 15 minutes, try to step back, stand up straight, walk around and drink some water.
Tip 5 - Pay attention to what your body is telling you. If you feel any pain in your chest or shortness of breath take a break.
Tip 6 - Think hard about whether you should be shoveling at all. Some people with health problems, or people who are not physically active should not shovel at all.
