A warning for expectant moms about the connection between pregnancy and heart attacks. Heart attacks during pregnancy are uncommon.
However, they occur three to four times more often than among non--pregnant women. They tend to be more severe, harder to diagnose and treat, and lead to more complications.
The most common cause of heart attacks is fat blocking the arteries. But in pregnancy the most common cause is *tearing" of the arteries, blocking normal blood flow.
That means blood thinners -- the normal treatment for heart attacks -- may cause more harm than good in pregnant women.
