It's believed an outbreak of Salmonella is related to recalled peanut products manufactured by Sunland Inc.
Officials with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) say efforts of state, local, and federal public health and regulatory agencies indicate that Trader Joe's Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter made with Sea Salt, manufactured by Sunland, Inc. of Portales, New Mexico, is a likely source of the outbreak.
According to the CDC, a total of 35 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Bredeney have been reported from 19 states. Of those, eight have been hospitalized and 63 percent are children under the age of 10. No deaths had been reported as of Monday.
In addition to being sold in Trader Joe's, some of the products were sold in Giant Food Stores in the Baltimore area. Giant issued its own recall in September , promising a refund to customers who purchased products that could be contaminated.
Research recently performed by the FDA reportedly also found the presence of salmonella in raw peanuts used at Sunland the peanut processing facilities. Officials with the FDA also say salmonella was found on work surfaces in Sunland facilities.
As a result, on October 12, Suland Inc. expanded its recall of peanut products to include raw and roasted shelled and in-shell peanuts.

The CDC recommends consumers avoid recalled peanut and seed products manufactured by Sunland and dispose of any remaining jars of recalled products in the home or return the products to the place of purchase.
