According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of Thursday there were 13 cases documented of fungal meningitis in the state of Maryland.

The CDC reports though the numbers have increased in the last week, there is still only one known death in the state.

Nationwide, as of Thursday, there were a total of 170 cases of fungal meningitis and 14 reported deaths.

It's rare and noncontagious. Officials say the recent outbreak in fungal meningitis is the result of tainted steroid injections manufactured by a company in Massachusetts .
