WASHINGTON - Washington Cardinal Donald Wuerl (wurl) and top officials of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops say
they're unaware of any White House offer to compromise on its contraceptive coverage mandate.
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney has said the administration wants to allay the concerns of religious groups, even as it continues to insist that employees of church-affiliated institutions receive free birth control.
Catholic League President Bill Donohue dismisses those statements as insincere "masquerade games," and says he's been assured "there will be no compromise on the part of the bishops."
Cardinal Wuerl says the church won't pay for insurance that treats pregnancy as a disease.
He and Donohue say non-Catholics are joining the outcry against a policy that would require violation of church teachings.
