BALTIMORE- Sinai Hospital joins other area hospitals in offering human breast milk product.
The hospital says they are the first in the area to offer 100 percent human breast milk without the need to supplement with cow’s milk products. Sinai is using a fortifier made of human milk allowing infants to get the calories and nutrients they need similar to baby formula.
Sinai receives its donor milk from the Mothers’ Milk Bank of California, based in San Jose and part of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America.
Another local hospital, Johns Hopkins offers human breast milk to its patients.
Premature babies fed human donor milk are less likely to develop intestinal condition necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) than babies fed a standard premature infant formula derived from cow’s milk, according to research by investigators at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and elsewhere.
