5 potentially risky foods

BALTIMORE - Many popular food choices can also be unsafe ones. You won’t believe some of the foods that can easily make you pretty sick, especially during the summer. ABC2 works for you with a list of risky foods to keep an eye out for.

Leafy Greens

Greens such as lettuce, spinach, cabbage and many more could be contaminated by manure, unwashed hands or improper cleaning before you even add the tasty food to your salad. Since 1990, leafy greens have caused more than 300 outbreaks and over 13,000 cases of illnesses.

Eggs

This huge breakfast food has been linked to more than 300 illness outbreaks since 1990. Because the bacteria Salmonella can live inside the egg, proper cooking is important. Also, try to avoid eating any raw products such as cookie dough.

Tuna

The fish can be contaminated by scombrotoxin which is unrelated to mercury contamination. Scombroxtoxin can cause headaches, flushing and cramps. Fresh fish can release the toxin if it is stored above 60 degrees after being caught and cannot be destroyed through cooking.

Cheese

This popular food choice for mice can sometimes be a dangerous one. Cheese can be contaminated with Salmonella (just like eggs) or Listeria. Listeria is linked to miscarriages and doctors warn pregnant women to stay away from certain types of cheese.

Ice cream

There is nothing like cooling off on a hot summer day with a refreshing ice cream cone. But you don't want to become another number to the 75 outbreaks of Salmonella and Staphylococcus since 1990.
