CONOWINGO, Md - Girl Scouts have taken over the 600 acres of land at Camp Conowingo. They are enjoying everything the great outdoors has to offer.
"I really like going to the pool and going on nature hikes. Those are so fun because you get to see your surroundings. It's so beautiful out here," said Sierra Witherspoon, camper.
"I love coming to Conowingo. It's one of my favorite things to do in the summer. I always look forward to it because of all the great times we have here. I make all kinds of new friends," said Lauren Chaney, a camper.
Girls in the second to 12th grades descended on the camp. It runs for eight weeks during the summer.
The camp allows girls to sharpen their horseback riding skills, enjoy canoeing/kayaking and learning how to cook outdoors. The girls learn to navigate the challenges, adventures and surprises that come with outdoor camping.
"This camp not only builds character and gives kids a bunch of outdoor skills as well as outdoor cooking, outdoor rope training. It gives girls a lot of confidence that they might not get in school," said Diana Roman, Camp Counselor.
It's not all about fun and games. The camp experience allows the girls to develop new skills, build courage, confidence and character.
"I would like for them to walk away with more confidence. Most of these girls have never been in the woods or outside like this. It's building a lot of character for them. They are feeling so good about themselves," said Gail Edwards, Camp Director.
Despite the bugs at camp, some girls don't seem to mind.
"The spiders can get a little creepy at night, but sometimes you have to look forward to all the great things you are doing the next day and having fun with your friends and look at the positives," said Witherspoon.
Camp Conowingo is ACA accredited and always puts camper safety first. The camp is open to Girl Scouts and non-girl Scouts. More than 932 campers registered for the eight week camp.
Last year only 917 girls attended camp.
