BALTIMORE - For children at the New Song Academy, Friday was a special day.

New Song Academy students received the gift of music, courtesy of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO).

The BSO believes that music has the power to change lives, and are providing a strong foundation in developing the whole individual person.

Through the OrchKids program, the BSO has been able to share new and used instruments with the children in our cities.

Under Music Director Marin Alsop's guidance and direction, the program provides social and learning opportunities for the city's' youth, in order to help them overcome the social challenges they face, including poverty, crime and failing public schools.

The program was started small and is now making a significant impact on the children in the most serious need.
