WASHINGTON - The Ivy City Civic Association and Empower DC have teamed up to oppose the development of a charter bus parking lot at the site of the historic Alexander Crummell School.
Civic Association leaders and other concerned organizations have called for an immediate halt to the charter bus parking lot and facility, plans for which developed despite community opposition during a time when Ward 5 had no City Council representation.
The parking lot goes against years of city planning and revitalization efforts that are currently underway in the Ivy City community.
The proposal comes as a surprise to new homeowners moving into 58 new units of affordable housing nearing completion by developers Manna Inc, Mi Casa and DC Habitat for Humanity.
DC Mayor Vincent Gray's plans include relocating over 65 charter buses per day to the Crummell site for the next 5 - 10 years, during construction on Union Station.
