Hearing set on regulating for-profit colleges

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A Maryland Senate subcommittee is holding a hearing to discuss legislation that passed this year to
regulate for-profit colleges.

The hearing is being held Monday in College Park at the University of Maryland. The law is aimed at protecting students from aggressive recruitment practices, and it gives the Maryland Higher Education Commission regulatory authority.

It prohibits commissions, bonuses or incentive payments for student recruitment.

The U.S. General Accounting Office released a report last year that examined 15 for-profit colleges. The report found that four of the colleges encouraged fraudulent practices and all 15 made deceptive or questionable statements to the GAO's undercover applicants.
