FINKSBURG, Md - Young ladies at Gerstell Academy are learning what it takes to become a leader.  It's part of the Girls Leadership Program.  The goal is to engage the girls in discussions and conversations in several forums on a variety of topics.

"We believe in order for them to develop fully as human beings as leaders in an emerging economy.  We want our girls to be ready to compete," said Mary Louque, Director of Admissions at Gerstell Academy.

Leadership is a focus that makes Gerstell Academy stand out from other schools.  The Girls Leadership Program in the Upper and Lower Schools allow educators to help the girls set goals, learn a value system and focus on academics.

"It's prepared me for life because it shows that not only can adult women be very confident in what they do.  It reflects on young women and it shows that you don't always have to be an adult to make a difference," said Tyra France, Freshman.

The classroom is filled with pictures of leaders from Condoleezza Rice, the first female African American Secretary of State, Margaret Thatcher, former British Prime Minister and Dr Mae Jemison, the first female African American Astronaut.

These are female leaders to inspire and show that leadership is about overcoming adversity.

"I think this program has helped to empower me and made me feel confident and independent, which will help later in life," said Shellee Goldstein, Sophomore.

Some students have already put what they've learned to the test.

"Two weeks ago, I went to the outdoor school. I was a counselor for the sixth graders.  I help them make decisions and follow the rules.  My Gerstell teachings taught other little girls so that was important to me," said Casey  Webbert, Sophomore.

Gerstell Academy's mission is to develop student leaders with strong character who make a difference in the community.

Gerstell Academy is a co-ed Independent School serving students in Kindergarten to 12th grade.
