HOWARD COUNTY, Md. - Police in Howard County are asking residents it the western part of the county to be on alert for suspicious people or vehicles as officers investigate a number of similar burglaries.

Since January, there have been 12 residential burglaries or attempted burglaries near the I-70 corridor and near Md. 32.

In most of the cases, the suspect(s) gained entry through a front door.

Jewelry and cash were stolen, and the burglaries often occurred during the day or early evening hours.

Police believe that the incidents may be related.

In a recent case on McCann Farm Road, a resident reported hearing several knocks on the door, before two suspects forced open the door.

In this case, the suspects fled upon being seen by the resident.

Increased patrols have been added to neighborhoods in the area, and police are asking that residents be aware of suspicious people or vehicles and to report any unusual activity by calling 911.

Police have offered the following tips for burglary prevention:

  • Always keep all doors, including the garage door, closed and locked. Ensure that the door leading from the garage to the interior of the home is also locked.
  • Always lock your vehicles, and remove valuable property. A garage door opener in an unlocked car is like a key to your home.
  • Use quality locks, including deadbolts and Charlie bars.
Keep lamps or lights and a radio on when you're out so your home appears occupied.
Don't advertise when you will be on vacation. Arrange for a neighbor to collect your mail and newspapers.
  • Keep a list of the serial numbers of your valuables, such as televisions, cameras and
computers. In the event a burglar does steal these items, this information can help policereturn your property to you.

Anyone with information can also call the anonymous tip line at 410-313-STOP.
