COLUMBIA, Md. (WMAR) - A Howard County Police officer is in the hospital after his cruiser was hit by a drunk driver Saturday morning.
Officials said that around 1:24am Private First Class Ernest Newhouse , a 6 year veteran of Howard County Police Department, was at a stop sign on Washington Boulevard trying to make a left on to Davis Avenue when a Cheverolet Cruze jumped the curb, drove across a grassy median separating the two cars and crashed into the police vehicle.
Officer Newhouse was taken by ambulance to Howard County General Hospital and is listed in stable condition.
The driver of the Chevrolet, Yolanda Murchison of Columbia was not injured in the crash; however she was arrested at the scene for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Failure to stay right of center, and alcohol were factors in this collision.
