COLUMBIA, Md. (WMAR) - Investigators say the death of a man shot by a police officer came after a threat to shoot officers and commit suicide.
Police say the whole ordeal began as the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Percy Holland was holding his ex-girlfriend hostage at her Baltimore City home. The woman woke up just after midnight Thursday as Holland reportedly put a gun to her head and threatened to pull the trigger. The woman was held against her will until later in the morning when she was able to escape.
After her escape, officials say Holland took their 2-year-old child and left the area.
Baltimore City Police tracked the suspect to a Howard County home in the 9000 block of Constant Course in Columbia on Thursday evening where they were able to confirm his presence.
Police say they confronted Holland and ordered and repeatedly asked him to show his hands. Officers say he didn't comply, and was shot during the confrontation by a Howard County officer in the backyard of a home.
""You're going to have to kill me, or I'm going to kill you," Holland reportedly told law enforcement officers. "I have a gun. I will use it."
Family members reported to police that Holland had made suicidal statements earlier in the day and when officers arrived at the house that evening, he said that the police "weren't going to take him alive."
The 2-year-old was not found at the home where the shooting happened, but instead was found at a relatives home unharmed.
The officer that was involved in the shooting is Sgt. Justin Baker, a 34-year-old 12-year veteran of the department. He has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Holland was pronounced dead at the Howard County General Hospital. Howard County Police Department spokesperson Sherry Llewellyn says investigators are awaiting results of an autopsy to confirm details about his injuries. Currently, Llewellyn said, it is unknown how many times Holland was shot and where he was struck.
Investigators say they did not locate a gun at the scene.
