BEL AIR, Md. -

A Harford County school was on lock down Monday morning after an armed robbery at a nearby bank.

Harford County police said they locked down Patterson Mill High School for 30 minutes out of "an abundance of caution," while they searched for a gunman who robbed the Sovereign Bank at 1816 Emmorton Rd. in Bel Air.

The school is across the street from the bank.

Edward Hopkins, spokesman for the Harford County Sheriff's Office, said  around 11:08 a.m. the suspect, described as a white man in his 40s, wearing a red hard hat, blue jeans, work boots and a flannel shirt walked into the Sovereign Bank and forced an employee into the teller area where he took an undisclosed amount of cash.

The man then ran on foot from the back of the bank. Police suspect he had a vehicle parked somewhere nearby.

Despite a thorough search of the area officers were unable to locate the suspect.

Patterson Mill High School was locked down from 11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., but has since reopened.
