WESTMINSTER, Md. - Police have charged a Westminster man with making a false statement after they say he lied about being shot.
Officers were called to 51-year-old John Coker's home on April 20. Coker told police he was shot by an intruder. Area schools were placed on alert as officers spent hours searching the area for a shooter.
While Coker was being treated for his injuries, police received a tip Coker was lying about how he was shot. The caller said Coker actually shot himself.
On April 23, police went to Coker's hospital room to ask him some questions. Coker admitted he shot himself in the hand and leg while handling his .22 caliber revolver.
Coker told police he was afraid of being evicted by his landlord for owning and discharging a weapon.
Police also learned that Coker was on probation for an April 2010 charge for failure to stop after an accident involving property damage.
Coker is currently being held at the Carroll County Detention Center on a no bond status.
