Police reveal details of Perry Hall High Shooting

PERRY HALL, Md. - As students returned to Perry Hall High School, they joined hands in prayer for a classmate gunned down in the cafeteria less than 24 hours earlier.

Meanwhile, police released a picture of the suspect, 15-year old Robert Gladden, Jr. who was known to his friends by the nickname “Bobby G”.

"He was one of the ones that was laid back, quiet, always in the corner of the class, never said anything to anybody,” said Perry Hall High graduate Charles Martin, “You know... he was just away in his own little world."

But Gladden’s world erupted in violence Monday after police say he transported a dismantled double barrel shotgun to Perry Hall High on his school bus.

"The suspect in this case brought a broken down shotgun in pieces that could be reassembled,” said Baltimore County Police Chief Jim Johnson, “He also brought 21 rounds of 16-gauge 7.5 shot (and) a bottle of vodka to school with him.  We also know at this time that he was able to consume several sips of alcohol."

Police say Gladden went to his first two classes and then headed off to lunch tucking the bag containing the gun in a bathroom adjacent to the cafeteria.

They say after someone threw something near his table, he set his plan into motion.

"We know he went to that bathroom and assembled that weapon,” said Johnson, “He placed that weapon inside his garments, his shirt and trousers, and the weapon was approximately 34 inches in length.  Gladden entered the cafeteria, pulled the shotgun from his clothing...  It was at this moment that our brave school educator, our counselor, saw this activity as he was pulling it out of his clothing and immediately began to rush him."

Police say Gladden was able to fire a single shot before he could be taken down, striking 17-year old Daniel Borowy in the lower back at point blank range.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Danny Borowy and his family,” said Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, “It's really comforting to know that Danny is under the fine care of doctors and nurses at one of the superior shock trauma centers in the world."

Police believe Gladden took the shotgun from his father’s home in Hawthorne, and at this point, no charges have been filed regarding his access to that weapon.

Gladden is undergoing a mental evaluation at a local hospital.

He’s being charged as an adult with attempted first degree murder and assault.
