DUNDALK, Md. - Baltimore County Police are investigating one of their own after a police officer shot and killed a man in Dundalk Sunday morning.
Officials say police were called to the area of Seaside Road and Dunmanway around 2:15 a.m. for a reports of several subjects with backpacks walking toward a trailer park.
When officers arrived and confronted Joshua Michael Lopez, 22, who matched the description of one of the suspects.
As officers were interviewing Lopez, he became combative and began to struggle with an officer and eventually went for his gun, police said. A second officer pepper sprayed Lopez, but he did not stop.
Fearing for their safety, Officer Heins, an 11 1/2-year veteran of the force, drew his gun and shot Lopez who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officer Heins was placed on routine administrative leave, and has no prior shootings.
