BALTIMORE, Md. (WMAR) - Daniel Borowy was struck in the back by what officials have described as a "random" blast from a shotgun. While he remains in critical condition, his family is thankful for Perry Hall High School employees that got Daniel to safety.

Daniel's parents issued the following statement Tuesday:

"On Monday, August 27, 2012, our son, Daniel was critically injured on his first day at school. We would like to personally thank school personnel who quickly responded, getting Daniel to safety. We would also like to thank Baltimore County EMS, Baltimore County Police and the Maryland State Police who quickly transported Daniel to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore where he remains in critical condition.

We would like to ask the public, our family and friends to respect our privacy at this time and keep Daniel in your thoughts and prayers."

Investigators say the situation could have been much worse had it not been for the actions of school officials -- especially those of school counselor Jesse Wasmer .

Wasmer has been named by several students as the person who tackled Robert Gladden as the 15-year-old pulled a shotgun from his clothing. At some point Monday, Perry Hall High School students set up a Facebook page in Wasmer's honor .
