A 20-year-old man was convicted by a jury Tuesday in the murder case of a 16-year-old shot to death in Morrell Park last year.

Brandon Kyle Mitchell was convicted of first-degree murder, use of a handgun in a violent crime and carrying of a handgun.

It’s believed that at approximately 10:30 p.m. on June 29, 2011, Mitchell and Omar Deandre Johnson went to observe a fight between two men. As someone began to throw bricks and the crowd was maced, Mitchell fired several gunshots. One of those gunshots struck Johnson in the back. Johnson was transported to Shock Trauma and later died from the injuries.

Mitchell’s sentencing is scheduled for June 27, 2013. He faces  a maximum sentence of life plus 20 years.
