BALTIMORE - Ruth Monroe is now forced to be a mother again.
She has her grandson William Monroe's 17-month-old daughter after he and his girlfriend Meghan Kerrigan were shot and killed Tuesday morning in their Pigtown home.
Their daughter is young enough to not understand, but old enough to know.
"She misses her mother and father,” said Grandmother Ruth Monroe. [How can you tell?] “The way she runs around and looks in the rooms...she looks for them."
But Monroe says the fact the 17-month-old can miss her parents is only by the grace of God.
She spoke with her daughter, Monroe's mother Rhonda, who survived and is still in the hospital.
She told Monroe the suspect, Melville Mason first shot her, her friend and then William in the hallway of the home Tuesday morning.
Then she says Meghan Kerrigan came out of the bedroom and Mason shot and killed her; what happened next this family says, would have made an already horrendous story even more unbearable.
"The baby was there, the baby was crying and the baby came out of the bedroom and he tried to shoot the baby and the gun wouldn't shoot," Monroe said.
Powerless and suffering from a gunshot wound, William's mother Rhonda could only watch but feared something like this was bound to happen.
The family says Mason threatened the family as far back as Friday…they even called the police; a report was taken but the family says that was it.
"I feel they should have done something with him that day, I really do and maybe this could have been prevented," Monroe said.
Baltimore Police are looking into the family's claim, but Monroe hardly lays this at the feet of police, rather a mad man who was intent on taking lives; neighbors heard Mason announce as much through the walls Tuesday morning.
"He said, I'm the reaper, I'm your worst nightmare. I am here to collect souls,"
And about as clear as Felicia Knellinger and her boyfriend heard that statement, they then heard the screams of her best friends along with multiple gun shots.
To help her cope she organized a vigil Wednesday night and spent the afternoon on her porch preparing Styrofoam cups and candles.
She made 100 of them, but expects to run out.
The whole block will be there along with friends and a family now shaken to its core.
"I have to bury my grandson and his girlfriend Meghan. They are both going to be laid out together....and we have a baby to raise," Monroe said.
Late Wednesday afternoon, Baltimore Police responded to our questions concerning the police report taken four days before the murders; the department says they are aware of that report and are looking into it under the scope of the entire investigation.
