BALTIMORE - Two men were sentenced to life in prison Monday for attempting to murder a man whose mother was watching out for him as he tried to walk to a friend's home.

Tavon Jackson received life in prison with all but 75 years suspended and Dijon McClurkin also received life in prison with all but 60 years suspended.

On April 30, 2010, Reginald Maynard asked his mother to stand watch as he walked to visit a friend who lived on the same street, Shannon Drive. He was concerned about the presence of Jackson, who also lived on Shannon Dr., since the two had a history of not getting along.

His mother agreed and at about 11:00 p.m., went to the front porch to keep an eye on her son.

Shortly after Maynard left the house he encountered Jackson, who was speaking into an SUV parked outside Jackson's house. Once McClurkin spotted the victim, he jumped out of the SUV, ran up behind Maynard and opened fire on him.

Maynard's mother ran from the front porch and towards the shooter, screaming for him to stop. McClurkin stopped, but only to turn the gun on her.

McClurkin didn't shoot Maynard's mother, but the pair got into the SUV and fled the scene.

Maynard suffered gunshot two wounds.

After tracking the SUV, police arrested Jackson, McClurkin and the SUV driver, Donte Anderson.

After a sic-day trial, a jury convicted Jackson and McClurkin in October of attempted first degree murder, use of a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence, conspiracy to commit first degree murder and other charges.

A month later Anderson pled guilty to related charges.
