GLEN BURNIE, Md. - Gas Station Owner Krish Khatiwada saw him all the time. Fifty-two-year-old John Stewart of Glen Burnie always walked the street.
Last night, Stewart was run over and killed while trying to cross Mountain Road.
Six pedestrians have been killed so far this year in Anne Arundel County. Monday a person was hit by a car and survived. Officials credit the survival to the fact the driver stopped and gave the woman CPR.
In the case of Stewart, the driver didn’t even stop. Witnesses say the driver slowed down and paused, but never got out of the vehicle. The dark minivan/SUV was seen driving away from the scene down Mountain Road.
Officials with the Anne Arundel County Police Department say the vehicle should have damage to the front end. While they believe the crash was a pedestrian error because Stewart did not use the cross walk, the driver will face charges for leaving the scene.
“Now our focus is directed to locating this driver who did not remain on the scene," says police department spokesman Justin Mulcahy. "If he did stop and render aid and call 911, this could be a different situation we're dealing with. But now, we are actively looking for this driver.”
Anyone with information is asked to call the Anne Arundel County Police Department.
