LOTHIAN, Md. (WMAR) - UPDATE | An 18-year-old man is charged after police say he assaulted a woman and her six-year-old daughter.
Melvin Davis, Jr., of the 5200 block of Sands Road in Lothian, faces assault and attempted robbery charges.
Anne Arundel County Police say community interviews helped lead to the arrest.
A mother and her 6-year-old daughter were assaulted during an attempted robbery Thursday in Lothian.
Anne Arundel County police said officers responded at about 4:40 p.m. to the 1200 block of Whittington Drive for a reported assault/attempted robbery. The 31-year-old victim told police that she was walking on Whittington Drive with her daughter when she was approached from behind.
The victim continued that a teenage male asked for her money before he punched her and knocked her to the ground. The suspect then began to kick her while trying to take her purse. The victim’s daughter then stepped in between to stop the assault, at which time the suspect struck the child in the chest, police said.
Nearby residents then came out to intervene before the suspect ran off, police said.
The fire department responded to the scene and treated the mother and her daughter for minor injuries.
Police describe the suspect as a black male, between 15 and 20 years old with a thin build, close-cut hair. He was last seen wearing a red shirt and blue jeans.
