JESSUP, Md. - A 4-month-old boy, who was not restrained in a child safety seat, suffered critical injuries after being involved in a multi-vehicle accident Wednesday in Jessup.
According to Anne Arundel County police, the accident occurred around 6 p.m. in the area of Clark Road and Youse Avenue in Jessup. Police said a Dodge Grand Caravan was traveling south on Clark Road when the vehicle crossed the double yellow center lines and struck a Mitsubishi Eclipse traveling in the opposite direction.
Police said the infant was sitting in the lap of the front seat passenger in the Dodge Grand Caravan, who was not restrained in a child safety seat at the time of the collision. The child was transported to Johns Hopkins Children's Center with critical injuries. The child is the son of the driver of the Dodge, who police identified as Matthew Dale Mitchell, 30, of the 7800 block of Clark Road in Jessup
The primary cause of this crash is failure to drive right of center on behalf of the Dodge driver, police said. In addition, speed does not appear contributory although the driver of the Dodge showed signs of possible alcohol use.
Mitchell, along with the driver and passenger of the Mitsubishi were transported to the hospital and were listed in stable condition.
Pollice said the investigation is ongoing at this time.
