For those who work minimum wage jobs in Maryland the pay is $7.25 an hour.
That adds up to just over $15,000 a year.
Today, a coalition of more than 20 organizations will launch a new effort to get the minimum wage in Maryland increase.
Senator Robert Garagiola will also introduce a minimum wage bill later in the day.
The bill calls for an increase in the wages to $10 an hour by 2015 and raise the minimum wage for tipped workers from 50% to 70% of the full minimum wage.
It would also require the minimum wage to be adjusted annually to rise with the cost of living.
At today's event, low-wage workers will talk about how they could benefit from the increase.
