BALTIMORE - We've all seen those late night TV ads, for products that are supposed to make our lives easier, but do they really work?
Hemming pants can be a pain, and get expensive, so we asked the Hack family, do the Style Snaps really work?
"I'm hoping that style snaps will help me hem my children's clothes without taking them to the cleaners," says ABC 2 News' product tester Jill Hack.
Trips to the cleaners have taken Jill to the bank. Whenever she gets new pants for her children, Ryan and Lexy she pays twice!
"If I buy a pair of pants that were $15, I mean that typical what you can do for jeans and then its $15 or $20 to hem them, then it’s no longer a bargain," she said.
Then Jill saw the 'style snaps' for $10 bucks or less. A simple, quick hem that Jill is hoping could save her time and money.
It was a family project, they followed the directions, starting with the pants inside out.
Then you fold them over to make a cuff.
With Lexy's skinny leg jeans the style snaps worked between the snaps, and the adhesives keeping them in place. The snaps got the thumbs up.
Jill asked, "You like them? Wow that worked out perfectly Lexy."
10 year old Ryan’s jeans were a different story. A boot cut style with a lot of material.
Because Ryan's jeans are not skinny jeans like Lexy's they had to use many more of the snaps.
From the beginning there were problems.
It was so difficult they turned to YouTube, looking for help.
After watching the video, Jill tried to explain, "you have it inside out, you take one of the style snaps and you pop it open and put one right here, and you put one right here, so you have both sticky sides right across from each other and you fold this and snap it and then fold this under."
Even with better instructions Ryan’s jeans still proved troublesome.
It unsnapped a few times and then it unsnapped again.
Ryan isn't convinced, "I don't like this. It's still under my foot and they're all popped apart," he said.
Ryan gave style snaps the thumbs down, even though after he followed the instructions correctly.
Jill says while style snaps may be a worthwhile investment for Lexy, the product makes going to the tailor a whole lot more appealing and a lot less of a headache.
So Jill rated the product for us, "I'd give the instructions a D, they were dumb. I don't think they work well, they don't stay snapped."
