PORT DEPOSIT, MD - In the town of Port Deposit the living is easy and pretty simple and that is just the way most people like it. Port Deposit is a historic town that runs about a mile along the east bank of the Susquehanna River.
JoAnn Capello owns Capello Confections Bakery. She's busy making some yummy concoctions. She's been in business since March in Port Deposit.
"We love it here. It's very quaint. It's very historic. A lot of people come visit and we lived here for a year and a half and we fell in love with it. It's on the water. It's peaceful and it's great," said Capello.
A stones throw away from Port Deposit, the Hollywood Casino Perryville opened up bringing in big business for the area. In its first four days of operation, the casino brought in $2 million.
This is great news for merchants like JoAnn.
"It's such a great little place. A lot of people don't know about Port Deposit. We are hoping the casino will bring people here," said Capello.
Patricia Vargas Morton owns The Hidden Bean Cafe. She's been open for a month. She moved to Port Deposit six years ago from Baltimore. She's definitely seen a new type of revitalization.
"Since we've seen here we've noticed that new businesses have come along. New condos and people moving from other areas New York, Baltimore and Delaware. It's a neighborhood that is close to everything, but yet if feels like its a world away when you come home it's relaxing quiet and quaint," said Morton.
She's excited about the new casino.
"I'm happy to see that because I think it will be good for the town and for the residents that have been here for a while and its an opportunity for people to be able to have gainful employment and putting us on the map," said Morton.
While the local merchants are seeing an increase in business, home builders are hoping for the same thing. Will Nori with Clark Turner Homes says his company has built some fabulous townhomes and single family homes on the water.
The company is hoping to cash in on the revitalization hitting the town.
"Port Deposit is going through a whole Renaissance. The charm of the town, the location to Interstate 95, the casino in town, everything is vibrant now and we are here to build a quality home as always," said Nori.
With all of these things going on in Port Deposit. What do the local people have to say?
"Port Deposit has a lot of potential. It attracts all different kinds of walks of life. I think that people should know about it and come and see it. I enjoy it," said Sarah Cohen, a Port Deposit resident.
Sounds like good advice. There's plenty to see and do in Port Deposit.
