As the ball dropped in times square many people promised to lose 50 pounds this year, or give up smoking.

But as we get into the New Year, some people may give up on those vows.

Why is it so hard to keep new year resolutions?

Researchers say it's because people don't keep them simple.

Those trying to keep New Year's resolutions need to be specific.

Instead of saying you want to go on a diet for the new year, make small changes to your daily eating habits, like giving up that daily soda.

If you want to quit smoking, don't quit cold turkey, because that's not going to happen.

Instead, gradually cut back.
