On June 19th, 1865, union soldiers enforced the Emancipation Proclamation and freed all remaining slaves in Texas.

Each year, June 19th is observed as "Juneteenth", an opportunity for people to celebrate freedom and equal rights.

Today, the Sanate plans to introduce a measure that will make the day a federal holiday.

Forty-one states recognizes the day as a holiday.
