GAITHERSBURG, Md - Gaithersburg is getting three new green projects.

Ground was broken last week on two buildings and a solar energy installation at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

The Net-Zero Energy Residential Test Facility is designed to produce as much energy as it consumes.

The building is designed to resemble a typical suburban home and will serve as a test-bed for
new home-scale energy technologies.

The National Fire Research Laboratory, meanwhile, is being expanded.

The expansion will give the laboratory the ability to test structures up to two stories in height.

Smoke and hot gases will also be captured and treated to meet strict environmental requirements and measure fire characteristics.
