Today's breakfast of champions is all about an excess of carbohydrates and butter; you've never had a better reason than this to start your day with flaky, rich pastry.

Crispy on the outside and decadently soft on the inside, the traditionally crescent-shaped croissant that we all know and love evolved from the Kipferl, an ancestor of the pastry that originated in 13th century Austria. But the Parisian claim to fame was perfected in the 1800s when a puff pastry-like dough and butter came together to create magic.Croissants are made with a special type of dough that goes through a "laminating" process, which is essentially dough layered with butter that is rolled, folded and then rolled out in a sheet. If you don't feel like taking the time to make your own, swing by the neighborhood bakery and scoop up a batch to make yourself a delightful turkey croissant sandwich. Grab a chocolate-filled croissant (pain au chocolat if you're practicing your French) for dessert and you'll be extra loyal to this food holiday.

We have the growth of café culture during the 1990s to thank for the widespread availability of croissants from bakeries to coffee shops - so raise your croissant and party like it's 1999.
