BALTIMORE - Today County Commissioners of Carroll County will gather to hear public comments on a proposed ordinance designating English as the official language of Carroll County.
County Commissioner Haven Shoemaker Jr. says he wants to promote assimilation and to avoid the costs that a bilingual or multilingual government could incur in the future.
Shoemaker says his proposal has drawn fire from critics who have launched attacks against him for being a bigot or even a closet Ku Klux Klansman.
In the county seat of Westminster there are bilingual postings from the state in both English and Spanish.
Shoemaker says 31 states have passed similar measures as well as two counties in Maryland. The public hearing will be held tonight at 7 in the county office building to hear public comments on the issue.
We want to know what you think about designating English as the official language of Carroll County.
Head to our Facebook fan page and sound off. It's our hot topic for today.
