BALTIMORE - Maryland health officials say two cases of meningitis, one fatal, in the state may be linked to steroid injections.
The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said Wednesday that it has identified two cases. The department said it would not provide information on the cases.
Health officials say an outbreak of a rare and deadly form of meningitis has sickened 26 people in five states who received steroid injections, mostly for back pain. Maryland officials say patients were potentially exposed from July 30 to Sept. 28.
The type of meningitis involved is not contagious like the more common forms. This type is caused by a fungus often found in leaf mold and which health officials suspect may have been in the steroid.

State health officials say the drug was distributed to Berlin Interventional Pain Management, Berlin; Box Hill Surgery Center, Abingdon; Greenspring Surgery Center, Baltimore; Harford County Ambulatory Surgery Center, Edgewood; Maryland Pain Specialists, Towson; SurgCenter of Bel Air, Bel Air; and Zion Ambulatory Center, Baltimore.
