Keeping people safe from fires is a top priority for fire departments around the country.

Here at home, Baltimore City will be getting some extra help to keep families safe.

Thanks to a grant from BGE, The Baltimore City fire department will be able to purchase about 800 smoke detectors for families in the city.

The grant will be presented Friday morning at 10 at the Hardy fire station on McMechen Street.

The mayor and Fire Chief Jim Clack will be there to accept it.

The Baltimore City fire department has been installing free smoke detectors in homes since the 1990's.

If you need a smoke alarm in your home and you live in the city, all you have to do is call 311 and firefighters will come out within two hours and install it.
