BALTIMORE - A highly contagious viral illness has been detected in Baltimore County in the last two weeks.
Three cases of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) have been diagnosed by Doctors Express of Timonium. The illness affects children under 5, but can impact older children and adults.
The disease is characterized by sores in the mouth and a rash on the hands and feet. Children can be exposed to the disease at daycare centers because it is spread by close person-to-person contact.
There isn’t a specific treatment for HFMD, but to lower your risk you should wash your hands frequently, clean and disinfect surface. Also avoid close contact with anyone who has the disease.
Over 50 Cambodian children have died from a recent outbreak of HFMD according to the Centers for Disease Control .
