NASHVILLE, Tn. - Patti Page came up with that distinctive vocal sound because she had no money.

Page overdubbed her own voice for an early single called "Confess" because Mercury Records would not pay for backup singers.

Her biggest hit, "Tennessee Waltz," was supposed to be a throwaway song used as the B-side for "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus," but DJs liked the flip side better.

"Tennessee Waltz" hit number one on the pop chart, and the country chart, and the R&B chart.

"(How Much Is That) Doggie In The Window" was another big hit for her.

Page died on New Year's Day outside San Diego of unspecified health problems.

She was 85.
